PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Volleyball) – Less than 24 hours shy of a tough 3-2 loss versus Northwestern Ohio, the Shawnee State volleyball team responded in a big way, defeating the University of Rio Grande in straight sets (26-24, 25-22, 25-23) on day two of Alumni Weekend at Waller Gymnasium.

Lauren Helbig (SO/Mansfield, Ohio) and Tiffany Jackson (SR/Williamstown, N.J.) were each stellar on the attack, recording 11 kill apiece with .556 and .421 attack percentages, respectively. Devan Scarberry (SR/Franklin Furnace, Ohio) tacked on double-figure assists with 22 and Madison Smith (JR/Orrville, Ohio) added 11 digs.

Volleyball - Thu, Sep. 4, 2014

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Volleyball) – Shawnee State seemed to be in complete control of a Thursday night contest versus Northwestern Ohio, but let a 2-0 lead slip away, as the Bears fell to the Racers, 3-2, to open Alumni Weekend at Waller Gymnasium.

SSU controlled the opening set from the get-go, jumping out to a 6-2 lead by capitalizing on four attack errors from the Racers. UNOH fought back into the contest, pushing as close as 15-14.

CINCINNATI, Ohio (Volleyball) – Tiffany Jackson (SR/Williamstown, N.J.) recorded eight kills and Devan Scarberry (SR/Franklin Furnace, Ohio) notched 10 assists as the Shawnee State volleyball team defeated the College of Mount St. Joseph in straight sets (25-16, 25-23, 25-19) Wednesday night at the Harrington Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Libero Madison Smith (JR/Orrville, Ohio) continued her control of the back line, notching a match-high 16 digs. SSU also dominated the net, recording a pair of solo blocks and eight block assists.

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Volleyball) – It took the Shawnee State volleyball just three sets to earn its third victory of the season, defeating Mount Vernon Nazarene 25-23, 25-19, 25-20 Tuesday evening at Waller Gymnasium.

The Bears also won an exhibition match over Columbus State in a five-set thriller during the tri-match later in the evening.

DEARBORN, Mich. (Volleyball) – The Shawnee State volleyball team won a pair of games and dropped two, going 2-2 at the Earlybird Tournament in Dearborn, Mich., over the weekend.

The Bears opened the season with a 3-0 loss to Indiana University-South Bend before winning a 3-2 thriller over Lawrence Tech to tally the first victory of the season on Friday.
