Volleyball - Sat, Aug. 22, 2015

MONTREAT, N.C. (Volleyball) – The Shawnee State University volleyball squad thoroughly dominated play over the first day in the Volley of the Mountains tournament, winning six out of seven sets en route to a 3-1 victory over Martin Methodist in the 3 p.m. matchup and sweeping Montreat by a 3-0 count in the second tilt at 7 p.m. Friday evening.

In the first match, the Bears fell behind early and lost the first set 19-25 to the RedHawks to start play on the afternoon. However, the Bears quickly regrouped, winning each of the next three sets (25-23, 25-18, and 27-25) to quickly dispose of Martin Methodist from there.

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Volleyball) – The Shawnee State University volleyball team will start the year by heading south for the second time in three seasons as the Bears will play Martin Methodist and host school Montreat College in the Volley of the Mountains tournament at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Volleyball) – The Shawnee State volleyball squad was selected to finish sixth by the coaches of the Mid-South Conference, officials announced Thursday morning.

The Bears finished with a 16-17 overall record last season and added a 7-7 record in the Mid-South.

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Volleyball) – Head volleyball coach Susan Shelton has released the 2015 volleyball schedule Tuesday. The Bears will compete in 12 home matches, 13 bouts on the road and a pair of tournaments away from home.

The slate opens with the Volley in the Mountains tournament on Aug. 21-22, which will feature bouts with Martin Methodist, host-squad Montreat College, the University of Rio Grande and Asbury University.

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Volleyball) – Six Shawnee State volleyball players have been named to the Mid-South Conference All-Academic squad, the conference office announced last week.

The award was given to student-athletes of at least sophomore status, who achieved a grade point average of 3.25 or highter. Seniors Devan Scarberry (SR/Franklin Furnace, Ohio) and Kristi Humble (SR/West Jefferson, Ohio), junior Madison Smith (JR/Orrville, Ohio) and sophomores Bonnie Huesing (SO/Mason, Ohio), Brittany Mounts (SO/Beaver, Ohio) and Rhyanna Day (SO/Beaver, Ohio) each received the honor for the Bears.
