PRESTONBURG, Ky. (Golf) – Josh Zornes (SR/Ironton, Ohio) shot a three-over par 147 (73-74) – birdieing the final hole of the 36-hole tournament to take home a one-stroke victory at the University of Pikeville Spring Invitational at Stone Crest Country Club on Sunday afternoon.
Zornes held a one stroke lead after day one, edging out UPike's Will Boyd, who shot a 74. Boyd fell to third on the second day, following a 71 from Pikeville's Tyler Smith. Smith's two-day 148 (77-71) was not enough to edge out Zornes, who grabbed the fourth victory of his career.
CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (Men's Golf) – Shawnee State was paced by a pair of career best performances from Ian O'Cull (FR/Maysville, Ky.) and Marshal Hall (SO/Zanesville, Ohio), as the Bears used a tiebreaker to best Ohio Christian and win the OU Chillicothey Invitational on Friday afternoon at Chillicothe Jaycee Golf Course.
SSU was locked in a battle, the first place score was tied at 311. The tie-breaker relied on the fifth place scorer for both teams. Thanks to Shawnee State's Drew Oxley (SO/Chesapeake, Ohio) shooting a better score, the Bears were led to their first victory of the season.
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Golf) – Moorhead, Ky., product Caleb Castle has joined the recruiting class of 2016. Castle looks to make an immediate impact with Shawnee State.
At Rowan County High School, Caleb competed in multiple sports including golf, basketball and baseball. Castle received the honor of Kentucky All-Star. Caleb is touted as a "hard worker" from previous coach Larry Slone who believes his golf game will continue to improve.
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Golf) – Ethan Michael Drummond has declared that he will join Shawnee State's golf team.
Drummond has competed in golf all four years at the varsity level. Ethan has received multiple awards, including; First Team All-County, First Team All-league and Second Team All-District. Drummond finished 9th out of 36 competitors at the Division II competition.
PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Golf) – Chandler Clark has signed to play golf at Shawnee State University.
Chandler has the opportunity to make a name for himself early, SSU assistant coach Dave Hopkins has said, "I see Chandler coming in and helping us right away. We plan to be a lot better next year and Chandler will be a big part of that. I look forward to having him around for four years".
The golf coach from Mason County also believes in Chandler's skill stating that, "he can go in and play right away".
